First real test

We did it! We had  a screening in Spain! Well, actually this event was not organized by us… We just brought (borrowed) the hardware.  But that was just what we had hoped for. A real test.

What does it take to make this kind of event happen? How long does it take to get everything ready? How to transfer the screen, hook up the sound system and projector? What to do if it starts to rain? How to do outdoor movie screening outside our own backyard?

Well now we know.

Yes, it was little rainy night and only few people came because of that. But for us this was just the right kind of test. And environment (harbour bar teracce) was really interesting. Movie was also about sailing. Very nice consept. Maybe next event will be our own…

P.S. Thanks to Pep for making all this possible!

Yesterday we visited this free outdoor cinema on the Barcelona beach. It was this summer’s last screening. Just before main feature, they showed Finnish short movie, Fasisti. It was very strange to watch movie on Barcelona beach with our own language! And what a coincidence!

Actually we did not even stay to see main movie because it had no subtitles and we were there just to see how this kind of beach movie consept would work. And again… it worked very well.

When we arrived, they were just setting the screen up.

They used heavy sandbags to keep screen in place even if it would get windy.

Screen was inflatable and as soon as the air went in, the screen came up.

And we think it was great. Something similar to what Katusekino uses.

Digital projector was huge. I did not get to see the brand or model. I noticed the tech guys had to change lamps to projector just when movie was supposed to start. Those things are not cheap I quess…

Another technician with informative t-shirt 🙂

Then the sunset came and movie was ready to begin…

Only problem seemed to be bright streetlights that caused annoying glow to the screen. Other than that everything was ok. This was of course not as great as Sala Montjuïc but still more than good enough for free movie on the beach. There was no bar but in Barcelona, you can buy anything from the many “beach shops”. And many people had their own cava bottles and other picnic stuff with them.

Organizing team was very relaxed. They did their job, drank some beer while doing it and seemed to have fun just as the audience. There were no peace officers or anything. This always amazes us Finns 🙂

Patio heater brings extended movie season

Fall / winter has come to Catalonia, Spain but we still want to enjoy movies outdoors. To make this possible, we decided to buy a patio heater. It costed 115 euros + gas (15 euros for filling). Not too bad. And it works great. It gives just enough warmth to our terrace for enojying movies even in cold evenings.

We want to thank Art Move Studio for this idea and our friend Pep for borrowing gas bottle 🙂

Sala Montjuïc

Sala Montjuïc is a huge outdoor cinema in Barcelona, Spain. It is located at the Montjuïc hill, right next to Montjuïc Castle. We went there yesterday.

The movie (Take Shelter) started at 22.15 but we arrived at 20:30 right when the gates opened. There was a warmup jazz band and one short movie before the main feature. We had not bought tickets in advance but it was no problem since the long ticket line moved really fast. Continue reading Sala Montjuïc

Short movies in Barcelona street

The most amazing thing happened yesterday… We are staying in Barcelona for about two weeks. Yesterday evening for some strange reason, I happened to watch down from our 5th floor window. And what did I see? People setting up a screen! It turned out that they were getting ready to show some free short movies on the street corner right next to us! We of course, had to investigate this in more detail 🙂 Continue reading Short movies in Barcelona street
